The Anatomical Pathology Service is concerned with the diagnosis of disease through the molecular and morphological study of cells and tissue.
The activity of the service, which essentially comes down to the study and diagnosis using smear tests and biopsies, is especially relevant in oncological processes. As a general rule, it is not possible to treat a cancer without the diagnosis of a pathologist, nor is it possible to define the therapeutic strategy for a patient without the information that a pathology report provides.
The Anatomical Pathology service avails of a quality management system as per the Standard UNE-EN ISO 15189 for carrying out analyses
Activities and Functions of the Service
The activities of this service include collaboration in the research performed in the hospital and the inclusion of samples in the biobank.
Highly Specialised Professionals
Quality in the diagnosis is down to a team of highly specialized professionals, each of whom is dedicated exclusively to a specific area of oncological pathology, in which they have extensive experience. At the same time, they are part of the corresponding Tumour Committee in the Hospital, where a multidisciplinary team of specialists in each type of tumour define the therapeutic strategy for each patient, as well as their subsequent monitoring.
In regard to the technical processes required, the service is furnished with the latest cutting-edge automatic equipment, both for the usual processing of the samples and for the complementary techniques (immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and OSNA), as well as with a full traceability system that allows them to control all the processes from the time of obtaining samples in the operating theatres up to the issuance of the final report.
