Classification of surgery
Diagnostic surgery
A sample of the tumour is taken to confirm or discard malignancy.
Surgical staging
Performed to determine the extent and spread of the disease.
Preventative surgery
Used to remove precancerous lesions which can develop into cancer.
Cytoreductive surgery
Shrinks the size of tumours that cannot be completely removed by surgery because of their location.
Palliative surgery
Resolves problems caused by the disease, such as intestinal blockage caused by colon cancer.
Curative surgery
Is performed to remove the tumour and a rim of healthy tissue to prevent recurrences. The aim is to provide results of the effectiveness of other treatments such as chemotherapy.

The committees are the ultimate expression of multidisciplinary medicine. They are made up of expert physicians from the main oncological specialities.
Admission and Information
Any citizen with cancer or a certified oncological suspicion can apply to be a patient at the Instituto Valenciano de Oncología.
As it has an agreement with the Public Health System, patients do not have to assume any costs for their treatment.
