The Gastrointestinal Tract Surgery the full range of pathologies relating to the gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach, colon and rectum) tumours, as well as the surgical treatment of tumours of the liver, páncreas and bile ducts. The gastrointestinal tract surgery section makes use of the latest technical innovations such as laparoscopic surgery, tha they have ample experience in. The CRS+ HIPEC technique (Cito- Reductive Surgery + Hiperthermic Intra-Peritoneal Chemotherapy) has recently been added to the range of treatments available at the IVO for the treatment of aggressive tumors that have spread through the abdominal cavity.

The multidisciplinary care centre provides treatment for urological cancer offering multiple therapeutic options for prostate cancer: open or laparoscopic surgery (cryotherapy). The IVO has performed more radical prostatectomies than any other centre in the Valencian community. The Urology Service is a pioneer in the development of new surgical techniques for bladder and kidney cancer. They are experts in bladder reconstruction and neurological function preservation as well as vesicle preservation techniques.
Surgery for gynaecological cancer. Extensive experience in ultra-radical surgery for ovarian cancer with the aim of removing all visible disease in the abdominal and pelvic cavity. This is crucial to control of disease progression. The team performs 70% of surgical procedures for early-stage cervical, endometrial or ovarian cancer through minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery.
MOHS micrographic surgery is used for skin cancer. The IVO was the first centre to perform MOHS micrographic surgery. It is a successful technique for the treatment of skin cancer and allows a minimal amount of tissue to be removed while making sure that all the cancer cells are removed. The IVO has performed MOHS surgery for the treatment of dermafibrosarcoma more than any other centre.
Microvascular free flaps in head and neck reconstruction surgery is another area of specialization. The otolaryngology service has extensive experience in this reconstructive technique. This procedure consists in obtaining tissue from another part of the patient’s body and using it on the area where the tumour was removed, minimizing the negative aesthetic aspects and improving the patient’s ability to breathe, eat and speak.
The sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure is used in evaluating breast, melanoma and prostate cancer. It is the first centre in the Valencian Community to apply this detection technique in vulvar cancer. It is the first node in the lymphatic chain of node to drain the lesion. If the result is positive following excision and analysis, it will indicate that a lymph node dissection is necessary.
Da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery
The Da Vinci Xi robot, the most sophisticated and innovative minimally invasive surgery technology available, is a breakthrough for cancer surgery.
Cancer-related interventions are the most complex surgical procedures and robotic technology brings great advantages for both the patient and the surgeon.
The IVO has the latest model of the Da Vinci Xi platform, and thus becomes one of the few Spanish hospitals to have the complete equipment.

Admission and Information
Any citizen with cancer or a certified oncological suspicion can apply to be a patient at the Instituto Valenciano de Oncología.
As it has an agreement with the Public Health System, patients do not have to assume any costs for their treatment.
